I have been wanting to start a blog for years now, and I’m finally doing it. I’m about to begin probably the greatest adventure of my life in a few months, so I find it fitting to begin something new with this public diary. I hope to use this space as a place to document my film projects, my photography, new music, new people I meet with fascinating stories, food finds, or just my obnoxious, rambling thoughts. This great adventure I talk about is my journey to Auckland, New Zealand, 8098.7 miles away from everything I know.
One of the major reasons New Zealand was my first choice for my study abroad experience was its interesting history with its indigenous population. The United States has a long and disturbing history with Native Americans, with them continuing to be marginalized in our society to this very day. New Zealand appears to have a slight resemblance with that of the U.S. in terms of its relationship with its Natives that I am intrigued to learn about. I am extremely passionate about issues of social justice throughout the world, so studying in New Zealand for a semester would grant me the irreplaceable opportunity to explore injustices on the other side of the world. Learning from the New Zealand perspective could help me potentially shed some light on how to fix these issues both in the U.S. and globally.
As a child of Latin American immigrants I have always had an inclination to fight for marginalized groups in our world. My family being from the Dominican Republic and Ecuador means the people I love the most are the very people who are marginalized and oppressed in society, so I feel a personal investment in seeking justice for those whose voices are silenced by the oppressors.
Considering Auckland is the largest city in New Zealand, and as a result likely the most diverse city, I know The University of Auckland is the right choice for me. Being able to study at a university and city that is alive and energetic with various stories, people, and experiences is important to me, as I want to learn as much as possible from as many sources as possible.
Hopefully, the myriad of stories and experiences I come across help me have a life changing experience in New Zealand. I hope to explore, discover, learn, and grow as a person as I submerse myself into New Zealand life. As a lover of life and adventure, I want my soul to feel genuinely alive and stimulated. I expect to achieve this through new friendships, travels, and a newfound attention to the mind that lies within me. In the U.S. it is very typical to see the masses constantly going but never just stopping to stare at the sky, or feel the wind against their faces, or simply to smile. I feel a place as peaceful and beautiful as New Zealand will only force me to stop, take a breath, and see the beauty of the universe around me. I expect to have more time to contemplate peace and harmony within the world and within myself.
As a lover of filmmaking and photography I have always been passionate about capturing moments, learning other people’s stories, and documenting the world around me through my lenses. I have this incredible feeling that something great awaits me in New Zealand to capture, whether that is a film to make, a person to meet, an emotion to feel, or a thing to learn about the world. I’m excited to take you with me.
